There is a Better Way Local TUC Round Up

Dumfries and District TUC

Significant job losses have been announced at Dumfries and Galloway College. The EIS Further Education Local Association had organised an open meeting that was addressed by the Steve James, EIS Branch Secretary at the college and Ian Tasker STUC Assistant Secretary.

This meeting was arranged to coincide with trade union negotiations and the anticipated announcement on the extent of the job losses. The local TUC is supporting further campaign in support of members at Dumfries and Galloway College and remains concerned that further job losses will occur elsewhere in the public sector throughout Dumfries and Galloway.

Dundee TUC

Dundee TUC is supporting the Defend Dundee Services Campaign and has published a newsletter highlighting this and other activity.

Plans are being made for a lobby of the Scottish Conservatives Conference in Perth on 19th March

This rally is being organised in conjunction with other local campaigning organisations.

There will be a Housing Lobby on the 28th March

On Saturday 2 April a street stall is being arranged to promote local campaigning activity.

On Thursday 14 Aprila demonstration has been arranged at the Dundee offices of ATOS, the occupational health provider contracted by the DWP to carry out assessments to judge eligibility for Disability Living Allowance

The annual International Workers Memorial Day commemoration will take place on Thursday 28 April at the memorial tree adjacent to Discovery Quay.

On the 29th April the TUC will be holding a rally as part of the Defend Dundee Services Campaign; a march will take place from Hilltown Park to the City Square. A social event is being arranged for the same evening.

Edinburgh TUC

Edinburgh TUC issues a monthly newsletter.

Current activity is mainly focusing on cuts in public services through Edinburgh Anti Cuts Anti Alliance and mobilising for getting to the TUC march and rally on the 26th March.

The TUC is currently engaging with community councils and local civic organisations in addition to holding a hustings event in ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections.

Falkirk TUC

The TUC arranged an open meeting on the 6 November. The speakers included Jeremy Dear, General Secretary of the National Union of Journalists and Dave Moxham, STUC Deputy General Secretary.

Falkirk is currently developing a website to promote the campaign of the TUC and other community groups.

There has also been an approach to the local paper with information on a Falkirk connection with the Spanish Civil War. The TUC is looking at how they can investigate this connection using the expertise on the civil war from available in other local TUCs.

Irvine and North Ayrshire TUC

Open meetings have been held Irvine and Saltcoats with another planned for Kilbirnie on 18 March. Speakers have included Katy Clark MP, Brian Donohoe MP, Stephen Boyd and Ian Tasker STUC Assistant Secretaries.

Irvine and North Ayrshire TUC are also planning a film screening of “The Road to Drumlennan”, a film that records the history of mining in South Kintyre.

Kilmarnock and Loudon TUC

Kilmarnock and Loudon Trade Union Council hold monthly street stall promoting local campaigns against public service cuts.

There has been campaigning against plans by East Ayrshire to cut the community warden service.

The STUC has attended a local TUC meeting to make a presentation on the Better Way Campaign and this was followed up by an open meeting at which Dave Moxham, STUC Deputy General Secretary spoke.

Glasgow TUC

Activity in Glasgow has picked up since the recent AGM with an increased attendance at the meeting and new members being elected onto the Executive Committee of Glasgow TUC.

The priority in the short term is to reinvigorate May Day. In the absence of financial support from Glasgow City Council the TUC is working with the Friends of May Day to ensure that the May Day, currently under threat by the coalition Government remains a day for workers in Glasgow and throughout the world to commemorate.

It is likely that Glasgow TUC will be publishing a newsletter in the future and would welcome examples from other TUCs

South Lanarkshire TUC

South Lanarkshire TUC held an open “There is a Better Way” meeting on November 6 with over 100 attending. Speakers included Dave Moxham, STUC Deputy General Secretary and Phil McGarry, former Regional Organiser of the RMT.

An anti cuts alliance was formed as an outcome of that meeting the alliance has mounted a number of successful local campaigns including one to reverse proposals to introduce parking permits for on street parking.

The PCS are holding hustings meetings throughout South Lanarkshire ahead of the election of the Scottish Parliament.

It was reported that there has been increased activity in the TUC building on this campaigning work.

West Lothian TUC

West Lothian TUC has held a seminar to raise awareness of the STUC’s “There is a Better Way” campaign. Following this event a motion was passed by West Lothian Council supporting the campaign.

An event has been organised for local communities on 2 April to discuss economic inequality and social justice.

The TUC are supporting along with other community group the Bathgate Once More coincide with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Bathgate British Leyland’s truck assembly plant and the 25th anniversary of its closure. The project is being supported by the Workers Educational Association Scotland and the STUC and is funded by the heritage lottery fund.

West Lothian TUC is looking at developing some joint campaigns with neighbouring Falkirk TUC.
